The Framing Business » Milwaukee Mafia, the Balistrieri Years IV: 1. On January 8, 1. 98. Milwaukee Sentinel staffer) said that Frank Ranney used an assumed name and was actually named Frank Ranelli. He had used both his money and Teamsters money to buy the White Gull Resort in Door County, the Tumblebrook Country Club in Waukesha County, and the Jack- O- Lantern resort in Eagle River, Wisconsin. The latter was originally a place Jimmy Hoffa and Allan Dorfman used to entertain politicians. The informant recalled that a Milwaukee Vice Squad captain had been there, as well as Inspector Dolan. The resort is not open to the public and has its own security force. Many Detroit mobsters were known to frequent the resort. Frank Balistrieri was secretly recorded on January 9, 1. Sally Papia. The only reason I told her that, because I’m not going to do it right now. See, now let them concentrate on that end. But Jimmy Jennaro, you know, he knows something or something. Jennaro managed Balistrieri’s Ad Lib night club from 1. Sally’s. The bodyguard was likely Frank Trovato, known as “the enforcer”. In a January 1. 0, 1. Sam Librizzi, in responding to Frank Balistrieri concerning the status of delinquent wagering accounts, stated: “Now Dennis . It’s on the slip there. What he gave me last week.” Librizzi made reference to “Feller’s 2. Balistrieri on the status of amounts owed by various persons to their gambling business. Frank Balistrieri and Sam Librizzi discussed setting up a sports bookmaking operation that would accept wagers on upcoming basketball games. The profits and losses from such an operation were to be split four ways between Sam and Dennis Librizzi, Frank Balistrieri, and Peter Picciurro. The term conjures up images of protection rackets, gangland wars, bootlegging and gambling operations; perhaps even an aging Marlon Brando with.Sam Librizzi was the one who suggested the idea to Balistrieri, and in the course of this conversation referred to the fact that his brother Dennis had already opened up such a bookmaking operation in which Balistrieri and Sam Librizzi were included as partners. Librizzi further advised that he and Dennis were going to “combine” customers and “rent an office”. In a telephone conversation on February 1. Micelli and Sam Librizzi discussed reduction of an amount owed by one of Micelli’s betting customers to Librizzi. At one point in this conversation, Librizzi told Micelli, “Yeah. But I see him all through the Football season, this was from . Also there was SAC John Glover, the ASAC, and the undercover agents (presumably Gail Cobb and Joseph Pistone). At this time, search warrants were discussed, and it was decided that the searches for the most part would not unravel undercover investigations in other regions. However, it was determined there was no way to go forward without revealing Joseph Pistone’s secret identity as an FBI agent. Therefore, he was told to get his New York LCN contact (Sonny Black) outside of New York and reveal his identity. At the same time, another agent would talk to Sonny Black’s boss and explain the situation. These wagers were recorded by Librizzi on a bet slip under the account designation “Match”. On March 1, the Milwaukee FBI Office finalized discussions of where search warrants would be executed against Frank Balistrieri. Places mentioned were La Scala and Leonardo’s Pasta House, where Balistrieri was believed to be a hidden owner. Also,a business office at 1. East North Avenue, which was the headquarters for three different vending companies. On March 3, 1. 98. Judge Robert Warren was presented with a 2. Balistrieri operation. The next morning, very early, an agent met with Warren and inked in six minor changes to affidavits. At 7: 3. 0am, Warren put the agent under oath and made him swear to all the information in the affidavits. At 1: 3. 0pm, the agent had to track down Warren again for four more changes. Warren was in Brown County (Green Bay) at Judge Parins’ office. The changes were made and the agent again swore under oath to the affidavits. On March 5, 1. 98. Warren in Judge Parins’ office and made the final arrangements. Warren requested that an inventory of anything seized be brought to him when he returned to Milwaukee on March 8. Around 1. 0: 0. 0am, search warrants were executed for Frank Balistrieri’s home, the Shorecrest Hotel office and the law office of Joseph Balistrieri. After knocking and calling, Balistrieri would not answer the door, and agents knocked in his front door with a sledgehammer. He immediately came downstairs, was handed a search warrant, and then called Joseph Balistrieri, who arrived twenty minutes later. The FBI seized documents (charting sheets and bet slips) from Frank Balistrieri’s bedroom in his residence on North Shepard Avenue in Milwaukee. Most of these documents were in the handwriting of Sam Librizzi. They reflected wagering activity on football games played on October 1. October 1. 4, 1. 97. October 1. 5, 1. 97. Another document seized in the raid was one giving Joseph and John Balistrieri the option of buying half of Allen Glick’s Argent Corp for $3. Also seized were three address books. Entries were found in multiple books for Frank Ranney in Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Fish Creek, Pewaukee, Egg Harbor and Las Vegas. Agents found a Remington 1. Winchester semi- automatic . Joseph Balistrieri told the agents, “This is my house and those are my guns.” An agent made a phone call and it was decided to not seize the guns. While searching a book shelf, Joseph joked with the agents that when they searched his office, they would find Penthouse magazines. He told them, “My mother would have a heart attack if she was here while you’re searching her house.” He then clarified (again), “This is my house.” The search took until about 3: 0. Special Agent in Charge John Glover. At one point, Joseph Balistrieri called a second attorney who stopped by (maybe John?). Agents entered the Shorecrest business office around 1. Antonia Balistrieri, who said she was the hotel manager. She refused to have them enter until her son arrived, and Joseph arrived at 1. They asked to have the safe opened, and both Balistrieris declined. At that point, Joseph left to go to his residence (see above). Joseph returned at 4: 1. SAC John Glover. Agents found four manila envelopes each labeled “5. This money was counted in the presence of Balistrieri’s attorney, James Shellow. The FBI suspected this might be skim money. Various bank statements, ledgers and canceled checks were collected. Attorney Shellow was upset with the agents, threatened to photograph them (it does not appear he did), and at one point even called the police asking to have the agents arrested for criminal trespass. At 8: 0. 0pm, the FBI had to call Warren back in Green Bay because the $2. With a tape recorded telephone call, and US Attorney Joan F. Kessler present, he authorized the seizure of this money. Glick called Snug’s on March 6 and Joseph answered the phone. We had a little episode here yesterday.” They then agreed it would be better to meet in person, in New York, than to speak over the phone. The $2. 00,0. 00 seized from the Shorecrest was sent to the Milwaukee Office on March 1. FBI headquarters. A number of bills were pulled out and marked as having possible value because they had latent fingerprints. Also of interest was a series of bills that had sequential serial numbers from the San Francisco Treasury. These bills, printed in 1. Balistrieris acquired the money. Nick George Montos was found in contempt of court in Milwaukee on March 1. Waukesha County jail. On April 4, 1. 98. FBI analyzed a hair that had been found taped to the dynamite under Vincent Maniaci’s hood. There were similarities and differences between this hair and a hair sample from Nick Montos. They needed a further sample from Montos to double check. Rudolph Porchetta lied on his renewal application for La Scala and the Brass Rail on May 1. He claimed he had never been convicted of a crime, but he had violated the state’s beer credit law in 1. When this was discovered, Porchetta was convicted of two felony counts of false swearing. John Balistrieri purchased guns from Liberty Guns on May 2. The FBI and US Department of Labor interviewed a member of Local 2. June 6, 1. 98. 0 regarding Frank Ranney. The man said Ranney was “the finest, most honest man I ever knew” and he was also “brilliant and efficient”. The man said he had never met Frank Balistrieri and did not know of any connection between Balistrieri and Local 2. Although previous searches failed to turn up Frank Ranney’s ownership of the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek, on July 8, 1. FBI received more allegations that Ranney had formerly owned the property in order to “give his wife something to do”. By July 3. 1, they found the resort’s abstract and confirmed that Ranney had owned the property many years ago. The FBI interviewed Door County Sheriff Hollis J. Bridenhagen on July 3. Frank Ranney. He said he recalled Ranney and his wife very well, and said Mrs. Ranney operated the White Gull Inn, and it was a completely legitimate business. After they sold the business, Ranney built a beautiful home in Egg Harbor. They had no employment in Door County. Bridenhagen recalled that he was serving subpoenas on Andrew Lococo and his associates around the time that Peterson Shipbuilders in Sturgeon Bay was building Lococo’s tuna boat, the Margaret L. Bridenhagen said during this time Ranney moved to Florida, and he suspected that Ranney did not want to get mixed up in the Lococo mess, as Teamster Pension funds were rumored to have financed the boat. Bridenhagen said Ranney’s wife was originally from Door County and married Frank after her first husband died. Picasso, l'arte, le donne (e gli uomini)Arte. La biografia di Pablo Picasso. Of course, the occasional Francophone hops in here and there, but not enough to remove the . Nonetheless, it is arguably the cheapest French bistro in the city, so I don't want to completely invalidate it because it does serve up some quality eats. Before that all came out, however, I was served a bread basket that contained your stereotypical baguette and butter. It was still warm and fresh, though, so I ate it happily. The goat cheese salad had enough greens to fulfill at least half of one's daily recommended total, as well as the perfect touch of sweetness from the candied walnuts. Of course, the hot goat cheese tasted sublime when combined with everything else, and I used the leftovers to spread on the remaining bread slices. Next came the risotto, which was arguably the highlight of the night. I believe that it was served with enoki mushrooms and cheese (it was hard to see but I inferred from the texture). Everything harmonized in my mouth to produce the perfect combination of bite from the risotto, the almost meaty quality of the mushrooms, and just the right amount of cheese. I had to control myself not to eat it too fast because it was just that great. It had a nice sound when I cracked the top to reveal the creamy bottom. The hard caramel top provided a nutty contrast to the smoothness of the cream, which was very nice and a perfect way to top off a delicious meal. However, I did get charged for water this time since I was asked by the waiter if I wanted mineral or sparkling water, and I was slightly confused because I always received normal water without question; hence I thought mineral water was its equivalence. One bottle cost about six dollars added to my total bill so that was kind of a yikes moment. The only reason why I'm not giving 4 stars is because the waiter did state that it was his first night working, and I'm usually lenient on first- time mistakes.
So in case that happens to anyone reading this, just ask for normal water instead, i guess. What an absolutely wonderful and charming restaurant. My partner and I went to Les Deux Gamins on the last night of our vacation to Montreal, which we picked over L'Express. So happy about that decision! We had a bottle of Champagne to celebrate the end of our trip, and it was fantastic (and very well priced). Our courses were perfectly spaced, so that we never felt rushed or looking for our food. We had the French Onion soup (so delicious! I'm still thinking about it today), beef tartare, foie gras torchon and the Hanger steak. Everything was delicious. Our server was very kind and made us feel right at home, even though we are from out- of- town. Wonderful French culinary experience. Presentation had finesse, duck confit was beautifully cooked as was the lamb. The steak itself could have been more tender, but was well cooked to medium. Service, while courteous, was lacking attentiveness- -we had no water for more than half the meal, but were not refilled until asked and even then were forgotten about until asked again. We ordered a French onion soup, duck confit and a steak. Food is great and remember to check into Yelp for a mini desert- a crime brulette! Right when I walked in I felt like we were back in Paris. The smell of delicious food to the round tables and wicker chairs, it was already off to a good start. They seemed realllly busy so it took a little bit to get our orders in, but that's almost always a good sign, right? We started with the onion soup and weren't disappointed. It was flavorful and just hot enough (I hate it when they bring it out warm and it cools so quickly that by the middle of eating it you've got cold giant lumps of cheese). Then we got steak frites- steak was tender and fries were nice thin and crispy. Also got the duck confit which was also tender and paired well with the accompanied veggies. The only thing we weren't a fan of was the brownie for dessert, it was more cakey than preferred but it was free (with check in!) so can't complain. It is a cozy place. Good for group and romantic dinner. I rarely eat the French Onion Soup but this one was very good. So cheesy but not salty. The only disappointment is that too much bread and not enough soup. Otherwise, this would be perfect. The lamb shank entree was delicious. The BBQ sauce was not too heavy or sticky and the lamb doesn't taste much of foul odor at all. The duck confit was cooked perfectly with the meat. We wanted some good French food while visiting Montreal, and were very happy with the food and service we received at Les Deux Gamins. I then ordered the Braised Lamb Shank, which was fall- off- the- bone tender and delicious and the shallot sauce was amazing. I highly recommend if you are looking for some good French soup and cuisine. This restaurant had great potential. It is very large, possibly three floors but only three or four tables were seated on a Monday night at 7. The waitstaff could not have been kinder. The bread was served warm, but the accompanied butter was a prepackaged tab. Having a house- made spread or even a tableside olive oil would have been a nice touch. The French onion soup was very nicely executed. For entree, the beef tartare was very nice but lacked flavor. It was definitely better once I added salt, but again, it needed a special touch. We didn't have dessert but there are a few on the menu. Overall, it was a solid choice for good food. While it didn't wow us, it did allow us to leave full and satisfied. I have been wanting to come here for awhile now. First time, it was closed; second time, fully booked. Finally got here on a week night and got a table. It was well seasoned but very greasy. It was a dish well done. But he did like the duck confit that he ordered. For me, the duck confit was dry. The service was just so so, our waiter never checked on us but the bus girl was super nice and came by now and then. I can understand that they were packed but the staff just seemed completely unprepared- they served us the wrong dishes twice and glasses were dropped so many times while we were there that I started to feel sorry for them. Our server did apologize for the long waits though. My boyfriend wasn't too satisfied with his duck confit though. He said it tasted like high school cafeteria food. It's awesome, comforting, and most of all it's not greasy at all. Even the walk to the restaurant was quite nice, as you pass thru a park and some Victorian- style houses. The tables are small, the seats are also smaller, and the restaurant has several floors. You are served by a male waiter, and the person pouring water is a female dressed in traditional French attire. I went with the French Onion Soup, escargots, butcher cut (short rib), and creme brulee du jour. Before everything came, we were served with homemade French bread, which was not surprisingly on the hard side, but it tasted quite good for what it's worth. The cheese was also plentiful and melted well with the soup, and the croutons also mashed well with the soup. The escargots were plentiful, and the garlic add- on was a nice touch. The butcher cut, which we shared, was grilled medium rare, which in this case was excellent. However, I would say that I had better beef in other restaurants before, and unless it's a part that's unique it's not something would order again. Finally, the creme brulee had an excellent cream texture, and is something I would definitely order again for dessert. I was definitely pleased with my visit, and would surely come back whenever I'm in Montreal. I went here with my group of friends and I can say with confidence that this place delivers in terms of food and service. Great music, great staff. I have a big appetite and this place left me very full. The salmon tartare was delicately seasoned and the beef tartare was complemented nicely wish fresh greens. It is so rare to see such fresh greens as garnish in Toronto. For dessert, there was creme brulee (it's very big!) and the flambed pineapples. The pineapples tasted heavily of alcohol, which may be a plus for some. Les Deux Gamins is located in a cute area and set up like restaurants I've been to in France (ie. This definitely adds to the whole authenticity and atmosphere of eating French food. Pricing is reasonable. First meal in Montreal with my husband during our visit, and we really liked the place. The day we visited was a busy night, and the service was slow, but the waiters were all very pleasant and nice, made things a lot better. Foie gras, beef Tarte, duck, lamb shank and salmon, all very well cooked/prepared, and the portion was good too. I have to mention that they have good bread as well. Usually, a restaurant pays attention to basic things like bread/rice, they care, and if they care, they will always serve good food. We were comfortably seated at a table with plenty of room between each other, as well as a comfortable distance from other tables. I have never been to France, but the decor and ambience had me feeling like I was. The steak was fine but nothing stood out to make it different from other steaks I have ordered, though I have to note it was beautifully cooked. I really enjoyed the tartare as it was light and fresh. Good ambiance, good food, and good service. Our first time here was a 4 star rating, however this visit we can only give a one star rating so overall I would say it's 2 stars. And we returned all our escargots and the chef refused to take it off the bill. My brother and I got and split all their appetizers. Their melted goat cheese was delicious!! This place was surprisingly good. It is a touristy restaurant and I'm not sure how often it is frequented by the real Montrealers. Having lived here for about a year, however, I would say that it's just as good as the other local gems of the city. We ordered the warm goat cheese salad, duck confit and sea bass as our main entrees. All super delicious and rich. Discus throw - Wikipedia. The discus throw ( pronunciation) is a track and field event in which an athlete throws a heavy disc. It is an ancient sport, as demonstrated by the fifth- century- B. C. Myron statue, Discobolus. Although not part of the modern pentathlon, it was one of the events of the ancient Greek pentathlon, which can be dated back to at least to 7. Using one arm, a metal-tipped javelin is thrown as far as possible. The athlete must hold the javelin by its corded grip with his or her. With Danny DeVito, Billy Crystal, Kim Greist, Anne Ramsey. The men's competition has been a part of the modern Summer Olympic Games since the first Olympiad in 1. Images of discus throwers figured prominently in advertising for early modern Games, such as fundraising stamps for the 1. Summer Olympics. The discus was re- discovered in Magdeburg, Germany, by Christian Georg Kohlrausch and his students in the 1. His work around the discus and the earlier throwing techniques have been published since the 1. The first modern athlete to throw the discus while rotating the whole body was Franti. He invented this technique when studying the position of the famous statue of Discobolus. After only one year of developing the technique he gained the olympic silver in 1. The women's competition was added to the Olympic program in the 1. Description. The 1. Women throw the 1 kilogram (2. Starting with age 7. The typical discus has sides made of plastic, wood, fiberglass, carbon fiber or metal with a metal rim and a metal core to attain the weight. The rim must be smooth, with no roughness or finger holds. A discus with more weight in the rim produces greater angular momentum for any given spin rate, and thus more stability, although it is more difficult to throw. However, a higher rim weight, if thrown correctly, can lead to a farther throw. A solid rubber discus is sometimes used (see in the United States). To make a throw, the competitor starts in a circle of 2. The thrower typically takes an initial stance facing away from the direction of the throw. He then spins anticlockwise (for right- handers) around one and a half times through the circle to build momentum, then releases his throw. The discus must land within a 3. The rules of competition for discus are virtually identical to those of shot put, except that the circle is larger, a stop board is not used and there are no form rules concerning how the discus is to be thrown. The distance from the front edge of the circle to where the discus has landed is measured, and distances are rounded down to the nearest centimetre. The competitor's best throw from the allocated number of throws, typically three to six, is recorded, and the competitor who legally throws the discus the farthest is declared the winner. Ties are broken by determining which thrower has the longer second- best throw. The basic motion is a forehanded sidearm movement. The discus is spun off the index finger or the middle finger of the throwing hand. In flight the disc spins clockwise when viewed from above for a right- handed thrower, and anticlockwise for a left- handed thrower. As well as achieving maximum momentum in the discus on throwing, the discus' distance is also determined by the trajectory the thrower imparts, as well as the aerodynamic behavior of the discus. Generally, throws into a moderate headwind achieve the maximum distance. Also, a faster- spinning discus imparts greater gyroscopic stability. The technique of discus throwing is quite difficult to master and needs lots of experience to get right, thus most top throwers are 3. The discus technique can be broken down into phases. The purpose is to transfer from the back to the front of the throwing circle while turning through one and half circles. The speed of delivery is high, and speed is built up during the throw (slow to fast). Correct technique involves the buildup of torque so that maximum force can be applied to the discus on delivery. During the wind up, keep weight is evenly distributed between the feet, which are about shoulder distance and not overly active. The wind up sets the tone for the entire throw, the rhythm of the throw is very important. Focusing on rhythm can bring about the consistency to get in the right positions that many throwers lack. Executing a sound discus throw with solid technique requires perfect balance. This is due to the throw being a linear movement combined with a one and a half rotation and an implement at the end of one arm. Thus, a good discus thrower needs to maintain balance within the circle. From this position the right foot is raised, and the athlete 'runs' across the circle. There are various techniques for this stage where the leg swings out to a small or great extent, some athletes turn on their left heel (e. The left foot should land very quickly after the right. Weight should be mostly over the back foot with as much torque as possible in the body - so the right arm is high and far back - this is very hard to achieve. Athletes employ various techniques to control the end- point and recover from the throw, such as fixing feet (to pretty much stop dead. The discus throw also appears repeatedly in ancient Greek mythology, featured as a means of manslaughter in the cases of Hyacinth, Crocus, Phocus, and Acrisius, and as a named event in the funeral games of Patroclus. Discus throwers have been selected as a main motif in numerous collectors' coins. One of the recent samples is the . On the obverse of the coin a modern athlete is seen in the foreground in a half- turned position, while in the background an ancient discus thrower has been captured in a lively bending motion, with the discus high above his head, creating a vivid representation of the sport. United States. Under USATF Youth rules, boys throw the 1 kg discus between the ages of 1. Girls throw the 1 kg discus as 1. Under US high school rules, if a discus hits the surrounding safety cage and is deflected into the sector, it is ruled a foul. In contrast, under IAAF, WMA, NCAA and USATF rules, it is ruled a legal throw. Additionally, under US high school rules, distances thrown are rounded down to the nearest whole inch, rather than the nearest centimetre. US high school rules allow the use of a solid rubber discus; it is cheaper and easier to learn to throw (due to its more equal distribution of weight, as opposed to the heavy rim weight of the metal rim/core discus), but less durable. While I understand it was tapas, just felt it wasn't large. One of the apps was served on Asian soup spoons. I expected that to have a HUGE punch of flavor since it was served that way. Unfortunately it was the opposite. Unfortunately we gave up and went to another place down the street instead. It's busy but service was really really slow... Too many excellent competing restaurants in southie.. As a local this is our first time but we will not be returning. Came here on a Friday night for dinner and for my second visit to Sixth Gear. While my first visit was uneventful (for better or for worse), this second disaster of a visit will keep me from coming back anytime soon. Our appetizer, the Brie and fig plate, was pretty simple and nothing special - I serve Brie and fig jam at home all the time, except with more Brie and fig.. My boyfriend ordered the chicken tenders and I ordered the Bully burger medium rare. First try: we got sliders and a burger cooked well done. We let the wait staff know, cordial apologies are made, and the entrees corrected. My boyfriend got the chicken tenders (not tender though - crusty and hard as rocks) after a couple minutes and after waiting a bit longer, I got my burger. Well done again - not a sign of pink, just fully cooked patty. A bit more agitated and hungry, I let the wait staff know again. More apologies and a glass of wine on the house (I asked for it, and my very nice server accommodated). At this point, I am much more irritated and mention there was no red center at all and that what medium rare means to me - not a well done brown center. Which means we're done. Also the wait staff is done too because no one tries to correct it a third time. I scarf down some of the burger because I'm starving, and we leave never to return again. It was good at first, however as we started to eat a little more the popcorn got soggy from the butter and bacon. It comes with homemade chips, which was pretty delicious. I'm not an. expert about Ceviche, but I do believe you are not supposed to cook the Salmon. The Salmon cooks itself in the lime right? I took a bite of the burger and it came out to be medium well with no excitement tastes to it. I was not even able to bite down on it. Like I said, Tasty Burger is right down the street. It came with 3 small sliders with pickled carrot and radish. It had no flavor to it. I was only able to eat one and a half but left out all the buns. However some decorations are more . Easy stuff to fix, but the cooks have to be invested in QI.. Hope they keep working to improve the experience. We came here the other night for some casual grub after I had a hankering for visiting my my ol' hood around my alma mater (UMASS Boston). There were quite a few people at the bar, but not many people having dinner, which wasn't really surprising for the hour. What we had. Cubano (sandwich). The salmon ceviche was.. It's served with wonton chips. Alone, each of these are amazing, but together the sodium level basically equates to your mouth being awash in crunchy delights of the sea. So we ate the ceviche with a fork- easy fix; and in that regard it was good. The salmon tasted fresh, and basically lived up to what I was expecting at a place in Southie. The Yam salad- interesting. I don't know that I would have gone with strips of sweet potato (similar to the cut found in fries), but that's what was here. Side note: yam is sweet potato for Americans.. The dressing was really what made it: tangy, complimentary, light. The sandwich.. well.. The smoked flavor on the ham was overpowering; a little goes a long way with the smoke flavor. I think that one of two things happened- the chef left it in the smoker for too long, or used liquid smoke in the marinade in addition to utilizing the smoker. Buuuut, like I said, my friend liked it, so there you go. They put an interesting cilantro dressing on the fries, which I LOVED. That cilantro flavor is not hidden! It complimented the jalapeno mayo and smoked ham flavor, and in that respect, I thought the plate was very well put together. I love to let bartenders and chefs use their creative discretion, and I'm always delighted when I get something not only original, but well made. I told him what I liked and he delivered. Rest assured, your taste buds will be in good hands if you are headed to Sixth Gear to imbibe (especially for cocktails). Justin the bartender was great as were the other patrons! He never let a glass go empty! We found it on Yelp and thought the menu looked interesting. We showed up and were surprised with trivia and Melissa our waitress (was the best!!!! Ask for her ; )) definitely a must visit! A date and I visited Sixth Gear on a Thursday night. The salad we chose to split was the best of the three items we ordered. Walked in and there was a strong sewage/toilet smell in the entry way. Thankfully not in the restaurant itself. I had the Cubano sandwich after reading the reviews, but the pork loin was 3/4 fat. Not good. This place is very close to my apartment so I really wanted it to be good but it was a bit disappointing, especially after we waited so long for it to open. The interior looks nice and the service was good but the menu was all over the place. We started with the salmon ceviche with homemade wonton chips that were really good. The ceviche was a little heavy on the vinegar but wasn't bad. The bbq pulled pork buns with apple slaw were delicious but the cubano was a little dry. If they made some menu changes, I'd like to try it again. Dined here tonight and Sixth Gear is officially one of my favorite burgers in Boston. Perfectly cooked homemade beef patty, brioche bun, house pickles, and.. B? Also, the fries are even made in house (no one does this anymore). We can't wait to go back. This place is a hidden gem. I moved here just over a month ago. The ambiance is charming and the bartender Justin is super friendly. He recommended the pulled pork sliders and the corn fritters which were both really good! Very promising addition to Southie. We went to Sixth Gear on opening night. We were impressed with the build out of the space. Great crowd with good energy. The bartenders were busy but welcoming and friendly. The winter squash soup was spicy and delicious. The yam leaf salad was very light. The bacon wrapped dates were good as an appetizer but might be even better as dessert. The Cuban sandwich stole the show. They have a nice beer selection including a rotating beer from Maine Beer Co. All in a great first experience. |
